The Urwerk watch brand was borne out of the collaboration of a watchmaker and an art designer who sought to redefine watchmaking by making avant-garde designs. Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei founded the brand in 1995 in Switzerland. The expertise of both greatly influenced the brand’s wild designs. Comparing them with unconventional watchmakers like HYT and MB&F is pretty easy. The watches are made in Switzerland. While parts are made in Zurich, technical research and prototyping are done in Aarau. The company’s name was derived from two different words, “Ur”, a place in a Sumerian city, and “Werk”, a German word for achievement or creation.

How much do Urwerk watches cost?

There are different models of Urwerk watches, each with different prices determined by quality. If you want to buy a Urwerk watch, you could pay at least $24,000 for the cheapest model. The most technical features are usually the most expensive ones. UR-Satellite is a unique collection. Some of them have cases made of titanium or stainless, while some are made of a combination of both. They offer editions made of bronze and editions that are black-coated. The prices for this model range from $58,000 to $66,000. UR-Special project is another model of Urwerk. Some editions from this model include UR-111C, UR-1001, and UR-CC1. UR-1001 is one of its most complex editions with a case of 106 x 62mm diameter. Because of its quality and rarity, UR-1001 is one of its most expensive editions, ranging from $450,000 to $476,000.

Why are Urwerk watches so expensive?

Urwerk watches are not your regular watches. They are made with perfect designs and highly sophisticated technology. Making a Urwerk watch may take several months because of the attention to detail. Details like movement, precision, or accuracy are taken into significant consideration. Also, some are made with expensive materials like platinum, titanium, and bronze. The materials used and the time taken to make each watch are why they are costly. Although Urwerk is a big brand, they make approximately 150 timepieces yearly, making them very exclusive. This number is minimal compared to the demand. Because of how scarce it is, it is not easy to get them as they go for very high prices.
